Easter in Corfu & Corfu Festivals
CORFU FESTIVALS: Like every part of Greece, Corfu has many religious festivals and celebrations and it offers various events throughout the year, especially during the summer time.
The August Cultural Events: This cultural festival takes place during the entire month of August, in the village of Ano Korakiana and consists of various expositions and cultural events that can been seen and lived in the streets and in some cultural centres of the village.
The anniversary of the Union: Every 21th of May, in Corfu town, the inhabitants of the island celebrate the union of Corfu with the new Greek state with Folklore dances, the local Bands and great banquets. It is considered as a bank holiday in Corfu.
The Feast of Agios Spyridon: In Corfu town, on the August 11th and on Good Saturday, litanies and celebrations are held in honour of Saint Spyridon, patron of the Island.
Varkarola: is the name of a festival which is celebrated in Corfu on the 10th of August where boats fill the bay of Paleocastritsa and Garitsa and traditional folk groups sing corfiot songs from the twenties (cantades), while fireworks illuminate the sky.
Easter in Corfu is considered to be the most magnificent celebration in Greece. Thousands of tourists (foreign and Greek) gather every year to experience this unique occasion, a combination of rich Corfu history with traditional religious customs.
